The ingredients needed to make Ven Pongal:
  1. Make ready 3/4 cup Raw rice / pacha arisi -
  2. Make ready 1/4 cup Moong dal / paasi paruppu -
  3. Get 4 cups Water -

  5. Make ready 6   to 8 tbsps Ghee -
  6. Prepare 15   to 20 nos Cashew nut -
  7. Make ready To temper
  8. Make ready 2 tsps Peppercorn / milagu -
  9. Get 2 tsps Jeera -
  10. Make ready 8 to 10 nos Curry leaves -
  11. Get 1/2 tsp Ginger crushed - (optional)
  12. Prepare 1 pinch perungayam Asofoetida  / powder -  (optional)
Instructions to make Ven Pongal:
  1. Wash raw rice and moong dal together in a vessel and drain water completely.
  2. In a pressure cooker, add the raw rice and moong dal with 4 cups of water and cook for 5 to 6 whistles. This makes the rice and dal mixture very soft.
  3. Allow it to cool for 10 minutes.
  4. Add ghee in a kadai and fry the cashew nuts to golden brown and remove. Keep aside, to add at the last to garnish
  5. In the remaining ghee, add peppercorns, jeera, curry leaves.
  6. Adding asofoetida and crushed ginger is optional at this stage.
  7. Add the cooked raw rice and moong dal mixture
  8. Add salt required. You can add extra ghee to glaze the whole mixture.
  9. Garnish with fried cashew nuts and serve.
